What Sign are you? Has it all changed?

There has been a lot of media hype lately about how the signs are actually inaccurate due to the ongoing shift in the earth's axis and the subsequent progression of the equinoxes.

What astrologers call the zodiac is a band around the sky about 18° wide, centered on the ecliptic, in which the Sun, Moon, and planets move.

The band is divided into 12 signs of the zodiac, each 30° long, that were named by the ancient Greeks after the constellations that used to occupy these positions; "zodiac" means "circle of animals," and only Libra is inanimate. Over the past 2,000 years,  precession has moved the constellations eastward by over 30° so that they no longer coincide with the old signs.

The following response was posted by 'Starjack' in the comments section of the above article:

"Every now and then some astronomers dig out the Precession of the Equinox and write some piece as if astrologers never heard of it, usually to the effect of, “Hey, your astrological sign got moved, you gotta get it changed!”

Astrologers have known about this for millennia. Seriously, millennia.

Aristarchus of Samos noticed it back in 280 BCE. What happens is that due to a wobble in the Earth’s orbit our relationship to the zodiacal constellations is in a constant shift. Our main point of reference here is what we call the Equinoctal Point, that is the point on the zodiac where the Sun is at the second of the spring equinox -- typically on March 21, but with leap years and depending on what time zone you’re in it could be the 20th. That particular point has been sliding backwards at such a slow rate that it makes a full cycle every 26,000 years. About 2,000 years ago that point was at the beginning of the sign of Aries, and a funny thing happened…

But first… for the many years before that astrologers had been noticing planetary motion and developed the system of signs. As with any developing body of knowledge they would slowly revise their descriptions of the signs as changes became evident. And the nature of the signs would change over the years to match the shift in stellar positions.

Actually some astrologers still do that. They are called “sidereal astrologers” and siderealism is practiced rather little in the West, but it’s very big in India where the system is called Jyotish, or Vedic Astrology. In the west we generally prefer the “Tropical Zodiac”  "

(Personal note: There is a practice in the West called 'Karmic Astrology " which uses the Vedic system and therefore the exact (and ever changing) constellations...and I am familiar with this approach.  I personally decided it was just too complicated to study two separate systems, and as the Tropical system works well I stayed with that.)

"Behind the “Tropical Zodiac” is the idea that the Zodiac of Signs is different from the Zodiac of Constellations. Building on Aristarchus’ discovery of the Precession, Hellenic astrologers figured that we are dealing with a system of interacting planets, the Moon and Sun.

The stars are markers that drift, but our main points of reference are not directly the stars. They are the equinoxes (both spring and vernal) and the solstices which altogether make the four cardinal points of the zodiac which in turn determine the signs. The stars help us locate those points which define the SIGNS of the Zodiac which remain constant in relation to the equinox point. The CONSTELLATIONS do move about and we take that into consideration when locating planets.

This may be a bitter disappointment to people who don’t like their signs and thought they had a chance to change them. No sign is better or worse than any other. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. A better approach would be to find a good astrologer who can tell you what your sun sign and the rest of your chart really are good for."

New Moon coming up... Groundhogs Beware!!

New Moon in Aquarius  Wednesday Feb 2   (Ground Hog Day!!)

I am a bit ahead of myself ...for a change.... must be all this Sagittarius and Aquarius energy.

At the moment the Moon is conjunct Venus in Sagittarius and also squaring  Jupiter and Uranus ...creating an atmosphere of  freedom, independence, impatience and excitement that will be continued with the New Moon on Wed.

Key words for Aquarius:

Thinking (and feeling) outside the box
Unusual, Eccentricity

Check and see what house the New Moon falls in, in your own chart (13 degrees Aquarius)
(This  page also contains an article bottom...about the false info floating about re 13 signs etc)

The New Moon is also hitting the Sun and Mars …increasing their combined energies and giving us all a bit of a kick.

Mars  (warrior, masculine, desire, anger, impatience, feistiness) in Aquarius... can have a bit of a chip on its shoulder…bit defensive, bit rebellious, bit touchy re authority. This Mars is a maverick…a very independent spirit.

Good time to start something new and daring in the area of your chart it falls into.  Due to Venus relationships may take new or unexpected turns. Time for change. Just be careful you are acting from a clear place and not just reacting.

Remember Pluto is in Capricorn so our authority issues are up for transformation…time to overhaul those old paradigms.

There are two rulers of Aquarius….sort of. The old ruler (before they discovered Uranus) was Saturn, so you could say Saturn has an influence here. Saturn being in Libra will mean some of these energies may occur in our relationships.

And Venus, (ruler of Libra) exactly square to Uranus (current ruler of Aquarius) will add to the unusual atmosphere. If you have been putting up with shite…this might be the time you break away and/or walk away. Or time to try a new approach?    One way or another, change is in the air. Freedom is the key.

Uranus is known by the key words/terms above as well as a few more….such as:

electric, sudden, revolution, lightning bolt, surprise, freedom, change, disruption, intuition, flashes of insight…

Uranus is never boring.

Plus this unruly planet is currently moving towards an exact square with Pluto…this  will be bringing a revolutionary air to the world and to our lives in the next couple of years.

I am reading a series of books right now about Josephine Bonaparte  (wife of Napoleon…) by Sandra Gulland …    (highly recommended…) and it got me thinking there must have been some strong Pluto Uranus stuff going on at that time (as there also was in the 60’s)

Sure enough…just had a look and.... surprise, surprise... Uranus was opposite Pluto. Plus Uranus was in Leo (royalty, monarchy) and Pluto was in Aquarius (the public, the collective, the greater good)So a revolution instigated by the collective upset and overthrew (Uranus) the Monarchy.

Astrology is so cool.

p.s. For those of you not in North America...a groundhog is a very large hairy rodent which (in mythology) comes out of its hole in the ground on Ground Hog Day and, if it sees its shadow and goes back in....there will be 6 more weeks of winter . Or not....if it doesn't (something like that)     (get the film)

This year I am sure it will run off and do something completely radical.

In or Outside the Box?

Ok , after my big speech about not getting caught up in the day to day details, here I am doing exactly that!

I blame it on the Virgo Moon!!
Anyway, here's a look at todays lineup:

Pluto and Mercury hanging out together in Capricorn makes for some intense and rather serious discussions. Over the next couple of days Moon is squaring that combination, as well as being opposite the Uranus Jupiter conjunction….

What does this mean?   Well, the Moon is moving into the spot on the major T-Square/Grand Cross that Saturn has occupied for the last year. Squares are points of tension and produce pressure on whichever planets and/or signs they are running between.

A T-square is created by 3 squares…(imagine a line running between two opposite planets…and then a leg going out at a right angle to the third. That’s the T).   The pressure is on the leg…  which in this case is the combination of Pluto and Mercury in Capricorn.

Pluto rules sex, death, and regeneration and is all about power and control. It can be obsessive and extremely possessive. It wants to transform whatever it touches. Mercury is about how we think and communicate and how we gather information.

Capricorn is about ambition, authourity and responsibility. It describes our sense of purpose and duty and where we make serious effort to make material gains.

Uranus and Jupiter together create a bursting forth of expanded energy. Ideology, travel and weight gain are all under Jupiter, and Uranus brings us flashes of insight and brilliance. And… impatience.

With this square to Mercury(Ideas) we may find ourselves impatient with others point of view, and overly controlling of what they say. Our sense of justice (Jupiter) or our personal ideology may feel affronted by their sudden(Uranus) outbursts (Jupiter) and or their impatience (Uranus) with our serious approach. Emotions will be involved (The Moon), sex may be involved (Pluto)  and there could be sudden outbursts (Uranus, Jupiter).

In Virgo this can express itself as criticism or picking at petty details. Virgos are also highly perfectionist and also highly defensive (as they are their own worst critics) so if you are relating to the Moon energy, try to let many thing pass.

Oh and add a Saturn square to Mercury which may create a battle of wills…or some kind of restriction or difficulty.

See where this is heading? Whichever of these aspects you get caught up in, depending on where they fall in your own personal chart, I suggest this is a good day to  be extra vigilant about what you say and how you say it. You may feel blocked or criticized or forced into something you don’t want to do, or you may be doing the forcing.

On the positive side, Pluto’s intense drive in Capricorn and Virgo’s attention to details, combined with the expansive ideas coming from Jupiter and Uranus, may make this a perfect day (or days) to do some really excellent work on a project that requires intense focus.

Additionally, the Mars/Sun combination connecting to these same points in a positive and supporting way adds to the vigour and focus this day can bring, and with the Sun now in Aquarius, unique and/or radical ideas can come to fruition. Aquarius is about thinking outside the box.

Just don’t make another person your project…or…if you do…don’t expect them to just go along with everything you think is best for them. They just might not like the box you are trying to put them in.

In adversity
It furthers one to be persevering.
In a time of difficulty it is essential to be cautious and reserved.
One should not needlessly awaken overwhelming enmity by inconsiderate behavior.
In such times one ought not to fall in with the practices of others;
neither should one drag them censoriously into the light.
In social intercourse one should not try to be all-knowing.
Let many things pass,

Full Moon in Cancer (get yer hankies out)

There’s a Full Moon on Wednesday in the sign of Cancer, and…yes…wait for it…it is NOT setting off the Grand Cross (being at the end rather than the beginning of Cancer) Whew!! .....though it will tip it a bit as it passes over.

The Cancer Full Moon WILL increase emotional sensitivity and our need for security and family (good time to call your mom), while a trine to Jupiter and Uranus could trigger flashes of intuition, inspiration and insight. Look where they fall in your chart to see where this might occur.

The Full Moon's opposition to the Sun  Mars conjunction in Capricorn gives some oomph to our drive to work hard and some spark to our interactions with others. Diplomacy may be needed at times, but you will get a lot done.

And/or you may find yourself howling at the Moon.

Meanwhile, todays Mercury (communication) is conjunct Pluto (intensity, power struggles, need for control) so it’s already getting a bit testy.  Good day for exposing something or someone and for digging deep into things. Just be aware of the potential for confrontation.

With Scorpio rising and Mercury conjunct my Sun, it’s an appropriate day for me to get to work (Capricorn) and write (Mercury) about deep/important things (Pluto). Some might say Astrology isn’t deep or important, but they do not know anything more than the daily blurbs you see in newspapers.

Real astrology delves into the archetypes and patterns that govern our lives. We can use it to gain insight into our own identity and soul purpose. It's a lot more than the pithy horoscopes we see in the paper.

Which brings me nicely to what is on my mind.   I started this blog as a kind of introduction to both Astrology and to me as an Astrologer. When someone wants a chart reading I give him or her this web address so they can get a feel for what I do.

I have always said I don’t want to get caught up in writing  day by day recipe plans for how you should spend your day….because Sun is here and Moon is there etc.

The true purpose of Astrology is for self-understanding, and while looking at transits (current sky) can help us see what influences are triggering emotions, reactions, events etc.  and I do use astrology for that (as in the beginning of this blog)… deep down I am much more interested in personal astrology: i.e. seeing how each aspect in your chart tells you something about yourself.

My dilemma … how to do both?

My solution has been to just write here about New and Full Moons…and in  between... cover a variety of subjects. Thing is, I have found myself so caught up in the amazing Cardinal Grand Cross (see past articles) and powerful eclipses we have been having in the past year, that I have written about little else. Still, I hope to continue to add other bits as much as I can, and if you are looking for more information, I have added some links on the side of sites that give a broad range of Astrological sites. If you want to work out your own chart, go to or get in touch with me for a consultation

p.s. All the current hype about your star sign changing is just that...hype. I will write about that soon.

Endings lead to Beginnings

I have just been reading an article about eclipses which emphasizes the way they signify endings...

While my last blog focused on the new beginnings brought by an eclipse and what we can manifest through intention, its also appropriate to take a moment to acknowledge...even mourn...whatever may be finishing in your life. At the beginning of a New Year I always do a kind of review of the last year as well as a preview of whats to come...(or what I want to come)   I often accompany this with a Tarot or I Ching reading to see symbolically what forces are at play.

My tarot for the past year contained the Death card in the position of environment...and I certainly had some huge change that is/was very much a kind of death  (had to ...quite unexpectedly.... leave where I was living/studying  for past 12 years due to work/Visa issues).  It is slowly turning into a kind of rebirth and in the end quite positive (I can say now),  but at the time I experienced much grief and resistance. So the death card was quite appropriate...and I assumed was related to this passing away of a part of my life.

Meanwhile, during the recent Lunar eclipse at the Solstice, I suddenly was filled with the presence of a friend and lover from my past ...who had disappeared from the horizon. I was inspired to send him my love in an email, which was responded to my an equally heartfelt expression of affection. It was a special moment and felt like a completion to all we had gone through.

But then I admit, I began to panic a bit when I received another equally gushy message.... as I really didn't want to return to that matter how romantically I was now waxing.  It had also been a bit of an ordeal....and I was glad it was finally over.

So... right as the Moon moved between Pluto and Mars and eclipsed the Sun (...ayaiyai!...) I sent him an email which put him in his place and did so with such aggression in it (re issues I had with his past behaviour) that the result was his very angry, hurt and cut off dismissal. So much for our sweet reunion.

The shock of the whole exchange left me a bit down for a few days. I much preferred the lovely sweet moment of the Lunar eclipse. But now, having read about the endings brought about by eclipses, combined with knowing the Mars and Pluto influence, (plus Mars moving opposite my Sun ...more feisty energy) I suspect there may have been no other way to finish.  My personal Mars in in Pisces, and I tend to put up with a LOT)

So I see that it was a perfect manifestation of the celestial climate, and though painful, I spoke the truth (Mercury Sagittarius) and got a result.  I guess the portal opened up for me (between the eclipses) to finish some old business. out for the shadow side of the eclipse. We will feel its effects for some time to come. If you find something in your life moving out of existence, it may be for the best. Let yourself grieve its loss , then enjoy the new energy being brought forward. Perhaps it's time for something completely different.

Solar Eclipse. New Moon. Make a Wish. Find the Gold.

Jupiter conjunct Uranus (for the last time) in Pisces brings us surprises, awakenings, sudden windfalls, new discoveries. Think expansion, joy, good luck combined with flashes of electric energy. Many are predicting some big scientific breakthrough …especially when these two move back into Aries.

What a way to start the New Year!!

Today’s Solar Eclipse is so close to this Uranus Jupiter meeting point  as to appear to be happening simultaneously (few hours apart)

Eclipses set a new energy field...New Moons do the same…and  combining both these energies with the Jupiter /Uranus conjunction means we have HUGE power for creating  intention. This is an awesome moment for seeing the outer manifest from the inner (as within so without).

What do you want to create in your life?

The Conjunction in Pisces brings an emphasis.... from this moment in time,...which will reverberate into the future. Pisces is about the ineffable, the undefinable…the infinite.  The depths of the psyche is ruled by Pisces as well as about what is called the soul.  Pisces also brings us into our fantasies, dreams, wishes, illusions.

The Solar eclipse being in Capricorn, where Pluto is already having a profound impact, also emhasises the ongoing restructuring of our world systems, governments, financial systems, structures, rules, institutions.

And as I said yesterday, Pluto in Capricorn also shakes up our personal  internal systems and patterns, our internalized rules, (what the Freudians would call the ID) father and authority figures, how we drive ourselves, work too much, strive and strive (yet never measure up), how we stoically do what we do without questioning any of it. Our addiction to external stuff. Our relationship to the machine. Our own internal machinery.

Well…there is now a cog in the machine. With Pluto's powerful influence it is all breaking down.
We can’t maintain these false systems, these false authorities...false gods....either inside or outside. Today’s eclipse and conjunction will open a portal to our soul to see out of the box. It's a wake up call to our higher self.

So we may find ourselves undergoing a rearranging of priorities (or they may be rearranging even  without us) How that will happen for you will depend n your existing habits and patterns(show by your personal chart.) What do you give authority to in your life? What is your relation to the outer world. Are you the Master of your own ship?

This awakening in Pisces brings in such a deep spiritual longing that we will start to look for the deeper meaning of life and question how we can start to live more in accord with that. This is helped along by the breakdown of the material world around us.  The false god of materialism can now give way to another source of power which requires no label (and wont get one in the boundry-less world of Pisces)  In Pisces we feel. We perceive. This is a chance to awaken to who we really are.  Find the god within.   Follow Your Bliss.

Everthing you are looking for is inside of you.

Happy New Year!!! 2011- Here we come...

"May you live in interesting times"

We enter the New Year with the same intensity that carried through the last. No folks...its not over till the fat lady sings!!  There is  more upheaval, change, breakdown and transformation to come. Hang on for the ride.

The Solar Eclipse this Tuesday at 13 degrees Capricorn heralds a New Start... yet continues the ongoing theme of transformation of the world we live in. If it falls close to a personal aspect in your own chart (Sun, Moon Ascendant etc), this will be a profound year for you.

And...there is also more Grace and universal support pouring in to help us find our way as Jupiter conjuncts Uranus exactly in Pisces and Chiron moves into Pisces Feb 8th. W e will continue to feel, even  more deeply, that pervasive longing to dive into the depths of our being...and  know who we are. Our wounds and vulnerabilities will push us to find a profound healing we never new was possible.

This eclipse sextiles my own ascendant in Scorpio, which I take as an auspicious encouragement to keep moving forward into the world.  After many years of study it's time to put it all into practice.  Wherever the eclipse lies for you, it will give you some Capricornian stability and structure, while also challenging old habits that need to go.

A Solar eclipse highlights  the inner aspects. When the Sun (ego self) is eclipsed by the Moon (emotional self), our emotional and intuitive energies come to the identification with authourity or father issues, sense of duty, overwork etc  may be coming up for examination. Let your dreams guide you is part of the Moon's message.  Becoming your own authority might be the expression of this.  Listening to the inner voice is imperative.

But if a mirror ever makes you sad
you should know that it does not know you.
