Outer vs Inner

There are two important distinctions to be aware of re interpreting current trends. There are what are called ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ planets, describing how close or far they are from earth.

Inner planets are called the personal planets and describe our more individual traits and tendencies etc. such as Sun for self, Moon for emotions etc. These planets move fairy quickly and their movement help describe our day to day experiences.

Outer planets, on the other hand, move slowly and affect whole generations. They are said to be impersonal and operate as major archetypal forces.

Where they are by sign can indicate big energies going on in the world, whereas where they are by house in our own charts shows how those big energies manifest specifically in our personal sphere.

So for example… Pluto in Capricorn right now is breaking down and transforming the material world (Capricorn). So, if it is in your 4th house, you might move or be  renovating or changing your house in some way. Or perhaps your family system is going through some kind of crisis.

On the global scale, an increasingly sharp aspect to Uranus… (planet of rebellion and sudden awakenings) … is triggering revolutionary reaction against authorities and established systems, institutions etc. all around the world. These planets were also  in tense aspects during the French revolution as well as in the rebellious 60’s.

Pluto in your chart right now, by house, will show where power battles and deep transformation may be underway. It will destroy/overturn anything that is outworn and outmoded… in that area of your life. It will show where you may have issues with authority and where you have to learn about power.

A transiting planet usually has most impact if it is already highlighted in your own chart. So if you are, say Scorpio rising (ruler Pluto), then a Pluto transit is going to have a particularly powerful effect in the area of your chart it is passing through. .

We can  look at what sign an outer planet is to understand how it is operating at this moment.

In my last post I mentioned that outer planet Neptune, now in its home sign of Pisces, would help bring in the spiritual energies we need to move us through this breakdown and transformation of the material world.

I pointed out that Neptune brings us into a world with no boundaries, which can be a bit scary at first. It works by dissolving what we thought was real or solid.

Look and see where this might be happening in your own chart. It will show you where you need to let go and trust. A lack of certainty can lead to addictions and escapism as we struggle to navigate the watery realms. It can also lead to deep experiences normally beyond our reach.

When everything around us is topsy-turvy and nothing is certain, it is important to invest in qualities that can carry us through. It will therefore benefit us to become more comfortable in a world less structured and less defined.

Advice: build/find a boat (metaphorically speaking) that can carry you through this period of upheaval. We need a container/vehicle that isn’t too heavy … light enough to float but is durable and safe.

Big egos based on accomplishment or acquisition will sink. Attachment to material stuff will also sink us for sure. In fact, attachment,  period, adds weight we don’t need.

Neptune, by the way,  is the planet of detachment.

Our lighter self knows who we are beyond any outer trappings… and is accessed through stillness and inner processes.
‘angels can fly because they take themselves lightly’

Intuition and creativity can be vehicles of a stellar nature.

Even if you are not especially spiritually minded, being creative and adaptable in times of uncertainty is a sure way to make it through, and Neptune /Pisces energy is nothing if not adaptive.

Compassion for the suffering of others is also activated. So if you are in good shape yourself, reach out and help someone who isn’t.

Ok…now for the personal stuff:

Right now Mercury is heading into conjunction with Uranus in Aries. You might be surprised by what comes out of your mouth, or of  those around you.  New ideas new ways of thinking will be especially active in the next week or two.

This energy is getting us mentally ready for spring when the Sun will cross over into Aries  then quickly hit Uranus. Expect a revolutionary blast into the stratosphere.

Today, a  Kite formation focuses on Saturn which just turned just turned retrograde at the critical degree of 29 Libra. This shows some relationships hitting critical point… and one more chance to go back and see what the issues are. Saturn wants to make us get real in our relationships.

Venus (ruler of Libra) opp Saturn is challenging…there is not a lot of room to negotiate.  Walking away from what doesn’t work, committing to what does… taking responsibility for your own stuff…etc will be the focus. This may be a time of endings, or firming up what needs firming so you can move forward.

Responsibility  = ability to respond

It is so easy to project onto others (especially with all the watery  Neptune, Piscean energy around). Illusions and delusions abound. We are all mirrors and what we see is often a reflection of aspects in our selves.

If the outside world is a screen and we are the lens, where we focus/project becomes our story or movie.

What is your theme?

Comments welcome.

Water Water Everywhere

Get your wellies out and your raincoats on; it’s about to rain!! (metaphorically speaking)

We are entering a very emotional and intuitive period as the Sun moves into the watery sign of Pisces where it snuggles up to Neptune (ruler of Pisces and god of the sea) and meets Mercury and Chiron there as well.

Neptune has not been in its own sign since it was first discovered there 150 years ago. Many feel this return will trigger a shift in our consciousness, as our deeper spiritual side awakens (on a collective level) from a long sleep.

When we combine the misty light of Pisces with the transformative and healing power of Chiron, we can expect some deep processes to be set into play. We may feel a deep  urge to communicate (Mercury) our usually unconscious and intuitive urgings (Moon) which may result in some rather profound (or strange) conversations.

On Tuesday, the Moon joins them all for the New Moon in Pisces.   ( “I’d like to be, down by the sea, in an octopuses’ garden all alone…”)

There is a sense of mystery associated with both Neptune and Pisces, and during this time we need to learn to let go of control and go with the flow. They say creativity arises out of chaos, and this is a particularly fluid and undefined environment right now.

Jupiter in Taurus, along with positive aspects  to Saturn, help ground the energy a bit, expanding our vision and giving it form.

Thus we have inspiration and manifestation… with a bit of fire and tension thrown in by Mars, Uranus  and Pluto. Think of a potter working with clay (water and earth) and then firing the resulting vessel, to create a container for liquid… such as water…  to quench our thirst.

Water has the fascinating attribute of appearing rather innocent and innocuous, yet is actually extremely strong and resilient. Water is invisible; has no definite shape or colour, and adapts to whatever container it is put into.

Yet when in motion, the force of water can wear down any obstacle and its sheer volume can obliterate houses, land, vegetation, people; or whatever stands in its way (as we well know from recent floods and tsunamis in recent years).

In its pure form it has little taste or smell, yet it quenches the deepest thirst. We cannot live without it.

Water is a metaphor for spiritual sustenance, yet is also the key ingredient in the mists of illusion that can cause us to lose our way.

The sign of Pisces (as well as the 12th house which is Piscean by nature) can be home for addictions and delusions. Some will want to escape to a boundary-less world where one can easily become lost.

Then again, both Neptune and Pisces are associated with wisdom, kindness and compassion as well as creativity, sensitivity and intuition.

True compassion arises from empathy as well as suffering. Pisces can be martyrs or saviours, or both. This duality is represented by the two fish in the Pisces symbol seen swimming in opposite directions.

With Chiron in this picture these dualities may be coming forward to be faced and healed. If you are playing either role in some way in your life, or  have a strong Neptune, Pisces or 12th house aspect in your own chart, this period could heighten those tendencies, and bring you to a point of having to break free from hopeless situations. That or sacrifice your self in order to save someone or something.

In these misty times it won’t be easy to see clearly. There is a lot of potential for dishonesty and dodgy dealings. Are we swimming in an ocean of illusion/ or an ocean of love?

Meditations and healings will be deep, dreams  more vivid  as the veils thin and we access these inner dimensions.

The New Moon on Tuesday will give us the opportunity to set a clear intention for this last month of the astrological wheel before we start again at the spring equinox in Aries. This one should be based on feeling. Logic won't stand a chance.

With  all this formless, elemental water flooding our intuition and creativity, let your  poetic, musical  artistic soul out to play in the puddles. Then plant the seeds of creative ideas and see them flourish.

Remember: creativity comes out of chaos. It all began with water....

Happy Valentine's Day

...and then Almitra said, Master, speak to us of  Love:

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.

But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.

When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, "I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

Whats Love got to do with it?

“Gamble everything for love, if you're a true human being.”    Rumi
Valentines Day is just around the corner and I would be remiss to not have a look at Venus, the planet of love, and see what shape she is in.

As it turns out Venus is feeling a bit anxious and jittery as she sits in Aries, holding hands with wild child Uranus and glaring sideways at powerful Pluto, god of death, destruction and transformation.

Uranus trine Moon brings a sense of surprise and delight to the day while the Sun still in Aquarius is open and friendly to all.

The Moon in sexy sultry Scorpio  will definitely add some sizzle, though  emotional tension could be triggered by the Moon's square to Chiron Mercury and Neptune in Pisces.

Neptune can distort things and amp up our disappointment factor as fantasy turns to fiction.... setting off  latent feelings of vulnerability and victimization (Chiron). What happened to the dream? We are all so sensitive and vulnerable when it comes to love.

Luckily, Jupiter brings us hope with his uplifting optimism while Saturn stabilizes what could be a volatile mix.

Hmm.   Sounds like the typical relationship type drama : Hoping for the best, fearing the worst!! Oolala!!

Valentines day is such a strange tricky thing. It supposedly celebrates love, but can in the end puts so much pressure on everyone to live up to some over-inflated romantic ideal that many walk away disappointed  (or just try to ignore all the hype and pretend they don’t care). Either way it’s a loaded situation and today we have a loaded chart to match.

So what is love anyway?

I heard a great dialogue yesterday in a film. Two women were walking along discussing relationships and one turned to the other and said…

“Deep down inside, most of us do not believe we are lovable. So we try to prove we are ok by finding someone to love us. We decide (unconsciously or consciously) to love someone for their potential to love us. It’s totally narcissistic. We love them and they love us and we both think we are ok because we are loved.

But if they do something to make us think they do not love us, it confirms our hidden belief that we are unlovable, so  we close our heart and stop loving them, (because our love is based on them loving us). This then makes them feel unloved (thus confirming their own belief that they too are unlovable) so then they close their heart.

And because no one wants to admit (or doesn’t even know) that deep down they feel unlovable, we get angry at the other person who wont love us and it all spirals downward until we have to part because there is so much pain…
... and then we look for someone else to love us…and on it goes....."
 There is a solution:
                                Love yourself first.

Then love is always there and we can’t lose it no matter what.  And we will then be able to recognize love in each other. Yet to truly love our self,  we must know who we are....

We need to look in the mirror.
If you knew yourself for even one moment,
if you could just glimpse your most beautiful face,
maybe you wouldn't slumber so deeply
in that house of clay.

Why not move into your house of joy
and shine into every crevice!

... For you are the secret Treasure-bearer,
and always have been.

Didn't you know?

-- Rumi

Full Moon in Leo: Let's Party!

Today the Moon is Full in Leo opposite the Sun in Aquarius.
Leo and Aquarius are fixed signs. They can both be stubborn and inflexible yet both are also very friendly and open to people.

Sun and Mercury sitting together in Aquarius help keep  lines of communication open. Aquarius is famous for its objectivity and ability to think outside the box, which can be very useful as a Leo Moon adds a little drama to things. Leo can be a bit  me, me, me and won't tolerate anyone trying to outshine them.  This is Leo's day  and most Aquarians won't mind stepping back and giving him or her center stage.

This is a fairly social Full Moon for everyone as a square from expansive Jupiter adds to the warmth of feeling and generousity coming from Leo. The only danger is that Jupiter in Taurus will amplify Leo’s love of expensive, rich delights and could trigger a spending spree or other types of self indulgence.

Leos love to pamper themselves and Jupiter in earthy sensual Taurus could trigger an urge for things like sex and chocolate and yummy rich food , (extra cream in your coffee?) …you get the idea.  And who says that’s a bad thing… unless you do it every day, sometimes it’s good to spoil yourself.

Saturn is also in the picture to balance Jupiter’s exuberance…  so everything should find a balance of sorts. Just don’t get into a push pull dynamic between Saturn and Jupiter. Saturn always wants to spoil the party. Neptune should help mellow things out by linking to Saturn and Jupiter. It adds a nice sweetness to this Moon; there’s a lovely creative flow of energy that will work to keep us all getting along and provide inspiration for any lone artistic types who must follow the muse.

And despite Mars backward motion in Virgo making us just a little bit bitchy and critical at times as we go back over stuff we thought/hoped was finished, there’s still positive energy in the air.

Sometimes the positive charge is caused through friction… which is currently (no pun intended ;) provided by Mars opposite Venus. It’s past its peak but there are still some sparks in the air that can be used positively or negatively depending on what gets it going (or what gets you going). This is the classic male, female, Yin/Yang polarity that creates chemistry for some and standoffs for others. Opposites attract! Just remember if you play with fire you might get burned.

The Moon trined Uranus crackles with electricity… there is definitely a charge in the air. Add Uranus into any mix and who knows what will happen.  You may be surprised or unsettled by this energy and it can be hard on the nerves, especially with the tension building between Uranus and Pluto.

These are tricky times. Things are shaking down all around us and we all need to tread gently. Not easy where Pluto is involved. Pluto pushes and shoves and blows the lid off any repressed emotion or bottled up feelings.

We need to develop a zen way of moving through all this intensity. Blocking it will only make it worse… but how to channel and  process such a powerful primal, electric charge? I started Tai Chi today… a perfect method for learning how to go with the flow.

Speaking of flow; Neptune has now moved back into its home of Pisces, where it will stay for the next 14 years. Neptune takes us deep into the depths of our being evoking dreams and vision both illusory and real depending on where it takes you.

The veils will begin to be  thinned now as boundaries are weakened. That can benefit someone with too much earth or fire… though people with air or water will need to stay grounded.

Neptune can lure us into a false dream that some won’t want to wake from. Sometimes, especially in these fraught times, its easier to escape into fantasy that face reality.

Yet, ironically, Neptune can also take us into a reality truer than one we know here (or so some say).  We  are not on this planet forever, and everything physical decays and dies at some point.  Neptune shows us what is beyond the veil.

The trick is to bring that vision back down to earth, into our lives.
Let heaven be on earth.

May the  warmth of this Full Moon in Leo shine upon you and in you… and  let your own light shine inside and out.

Thursday, 2 February 2012

Today is Ground Hog Day in North America, where if a groundhog sees it's shadow s/he will go back into the burrow and winter will last 6  more weeks.

It is also Imbolc (or Candlemass) .... the Celtic day marking of the halfway point between Winter Solstice and Spring equinox which is symbolized by lighting a candle to keep away the dark.

Both indicate a time to take pause and acknowledge our passage through  darker and colder (and more inward) winter days as we wait for spring to bring sun and warmth and outward movement (well in the Northern hemisphere at least).

The first New Moon of 2012 was a few weeks ago in inventive Aquarius, with its lightning bolt ruler Uranus sitting at the beginning of the zodiac in excitable, pioneering Aries.  Things were looking good, projects were starting up, plans were being hatched.

The Chinese New Year of the Water Dragon added even more impetuous, creative energy to our seed ideas, all waiting to be planted, nurtured so they could  burst forth in manifestation. A new year a new day a new start!

And then… suddenly... things ground to a halt and it feels  like  we're driving with the brakes on!

What happened?   Well, what happened was, Mars, the warrior planet or forward motion,  last week began moving backward  in meticulous detail oriented Virgo.   For the next few months (until April 13th) many will find themselves having to rethink, revise, and reorganize their plans.

This doesn’t mean nothing will get done, but it does mean you may find yourself moving more slowly and more cautiously than usual. It’s a bit of  ‘hurry up and stop!!’

As the planet of primal energy, aggressive action and sexual desire; Mars rules our animal instincts. It is what impels us to move forward, to act, to do. This is the raw, yang, masculine energy that gets us out of bed in the morning, or into bed er…  whenever! (wink wink)

This fiery planet makes us assertive, forthright and adventurous or impulsive, rash, and impatient.  The thing is, the god of war does not like to be held back,  and when its energy is turned in on itself, it can become a bit  paranoid, frustrated or temperamental.

You may find that Mars in Virgo wants to fix things. Everything has to be just right. And then some!
Patience (which is not a Martian trait) is going to be high on the list of desired skills this next while as we are asked to rethink, revise, and reorganize our plans.

That’s not such a bad idea. Virgo is ruled by Mercury so we will be rethinking as well as re doing.  Backtracking can reveal mistakes or details missed in the first sweep of a plan or project.

All in all, this can be an excellent time to fine tune things; just be careful not to drive yourself mad with this transit. Taming Mars rash forward motion may be a challenge,  yet it probably will be worth it in the end.

Also,  right now Mars and Venus are opposite each other (just for a few more days) which has added some sexual friction and tension between Yin and Yang elements. Opposites attract yet sometimes what we love can become what we hate. Venus in Pisces has a soft and dreamy side which can balance Virgo's critical nature. (wearing rose coloured glasses isn't always such a bad idea if it keeps the peace!)

Be careful, as bottling up this intense energy could also have negative effects on one’s health. Take time to breath, exercise, go for a walk etc to dissipate some of the tension.  Virgo can be very critical, and feisty Mars turned in on itself will be more inclined now to have us find fault with others as well as with ourselves or.  Let many things pass and try not to obsess!

This transit will give us the opportunity to examine how Mars functions in our lives (sometimes through sheer frustration). Mars rules both the head (Aries) and the root chakra (Scorpio) and its retrograde motion may show us something about our impulses, our survival instincts, how we deal with anger or sexuality, how we express our courage. Do we lose our head or do we lose ground?

This transit may also cause some self doubt when things don’t manifest a quickly as we would like them to. New projects may not get going as planned, perhaps due to hesitation, caution, and fear of taking risks.

Symbolizing the desire principle, Mars pushes us to get what we want from life. Maybe this pause is a good time to ask ourselves what we really do want. Sometimes our egos push us into things we don’t really need. Since we may not be able to just barrel through anyway, we can instead re-examine our motives and reassess our goals.

Looking more deeply at the things that we want and correcting our course if necessary will be of long term benefit even though it may not seem like it right now.

In June Mars will move into Libra just in time to oppose Uranus and square Pluto in their first exact square (the one that has been building since last year)

The resulting pressure and tension will catapult us all forward into something very explosive, revolutionary, and deeply transformative. Mars will have its day!

So taking the time now to get it right may well be the smartest thing you have ever done.
