Expect the Unexpected

Imagine the unimaginable!

Things are a bit nuts right now (yes even more than usual). Yet, tho it is tricky to navigate through this current astrology, there are rewards to be had. It is possible to get  lost in the fog that is being created right now by Sun joining Neptune in the watery, mystical realm of Pisces. This is the kind of stuff that drives some to distraction, while others become inspired and create the best creative work of their life.

In general,  with so much erratic and unusual energy going on, its hard to know what to expect next! These are powerful times. Not a day goes by lately without some calamity rearing its ugly head on the global news scene.  Many of us have learned to roll with the punches in recent years and have probably been "toughened" up by now. (or gone slightly bonkers!)

If the latter is true, you will be right at home with this weekends astrology. This is the stuff of dreams and visions as we get to peek beyond the misty veils.

The Moon in Sagittarius, at right angles to this unusual energy field … adds a positive vibe that brings out the seeker in us all. Sagittarius contains a homing beacon (the galactic core)  that can guide us through any fog. It’s an internal process that takes stillness to hear it, or more accurately, ‘feel’ it.

If  you feel stymied or flummoxed or turned upside down… stop what you are doing (it wont work anyway) and use the downtime for introspection, meditation, prayer, music, art. This non linear energy field is highly creative, and deeply spiritual... only somewhat frustrating if we are overly rational or trying too hard to force things in some way.  This is the time to take the path of least resistance.

Escapism is another option. (up to you... but please don't drink and drive)

To Summarize:

1. The ‘Grand Irrationality’ involves septiles (there that explains it…)  named so by  Robert Wilkinson at Aquarius Papers…cause it is!) Feb 24-25 will be in especially high amplitude.

Expect the unexpected.

2. Today’s Moon squaring Sun/Neptune in Pisces means fuzziness rules, and nothing is what it seems. Take the path of least resistance.

3. Mercury retrograde adds to the current confusion. Everything is on hold while we figure out what we are doing. Communications and plans get turned upside down during this time.  In quirky Aquarius…  Expect the unexpected!

Meanwhile:  Review the dreams and visions you had for the coming year that came to the fore at the last New Moon (around a month ago). You might have missed something.

4. Saturn square Mercury (which is going backward)
Regroup. Rethink. Re-negotiate. It’s not as bad as you think. It’s not as easy as you thought.

5.Pluto/Uranus Square (amplified by Jupiter)
Really bad things happen, but really good things happen as well. Expect the unexpected!

Robert Wilkinson, Re the Grand Irrationality:

“The fact that much won’t “make sense” isn’t a problem, since “it” doesn’t have to “make sense.” This is about our ability to choose wisely in the midst of majour personal and impersonal pressures. And even when things seem one way, “it ain’t necessarily so,” to quote Ira Gershwin."

Wilkinson says these are ‘fork in the road’ moments, where the choices we make feel destined. Apparently they are.

Use this weekend to tap into your inner realm. You will be rewarded.

Full Moon in Leo! Happy Heart Day!

Happy Full Moon!    Happy Valentines Day!

Both events happening together today make a good match, if we can understand the energy dynamics.

The Full Moon is in Leo, which rules the heart! Leo's planet is the Sun. This is where we shine!

Leos are generous, kind, a bit self centered (as in ‘center of the universe!’)  dramatic, natural leaders, rulers, kings and queens (as in drama queens!!).  Leos are excellent on stage, at home with opulence (element is gold).  Leo’s exuberant energy makes us playful, friendly, warm … and generous! (when you have so much, why not share?!). Those influenced by Leo  today will go over the top with flowers chocolates, gifts etc. Skies the limit!

Yet, despite its showy side, the true true meaning of Leo is authenticity!

“Aurum is Latin for Gold. The symbol for Gold in the periodic table is a circle with a dot at the center. In  Astrology this is symbol for the Sun, which represents the Self.” (from top of blog)

The  Sun and Mercury sitting opposite in Aquarius increase the focus on being our authentic self... as individuals and in relation to others.

On a day like Valentines Day, Aquarius is less interested in displays of emotion, disdaining the commercialization and commodification of love. These are the mavericks of the zodiac who prefer what is unique and distinct in each individual, going for the unusual gift or card, or not interested at all in what they see as syrupy sentiment.

You can see how this could get problematic depending on which side of the coin your energy tends to fall. Expectations are high on this 'day of love', and a Full Moon amplifies everything and brings energies  to a peak.

As the Brits say: “Don’t get your knickers in a twist!”

Focus on the positive lessons of the signs involved.  Both speak of the special gifts we bring to the world. They tell us to be the best we can be. Poets the world over all agree that 'to love' is the highest a human being can aspire to. The question then becomes, what is love and how do we love?

Aquarius puts us in touch with our shared humanity, and connects us to the larger whole.  It makes us step beyond our own self (Leo) to care about what is going on in the world (and with those around us).  We are all alone yet we are together. This human experience is bigger than you or I. We are a part of it all.  If we are bummed and feel lonely… is there someone we can reach out to? A group we belong to? A social activity to share with others? How ‘bout  volunteering at a homeless shelter for a shift in perspective.

Leo brings out our heart qualities. We can give to ourselves what we want from others. Why wait? Buy yourself chocolates or roses. Go visit a spa or soak in the tub. Pamper yourself. ENjoy this day of loving yourself. Know that you are the queen or king of your own life. And... use that Leo fullness to be generous to others. As I already said ... we are all in this together. Maybe someone you know is alone and a call or card would cheer them up. SOmetimes to give is to get.

As the Leo Full Moon  brings our attention to both personal Love (Leo) and universal love (Aquarius), it asks us to keep our hearts open. Beyond the sugary imagery perpetuated by a media gone mad...  and our deep desire to know love... this is another  chance to discover  a meaning to life that goes beyond the superficial.

And that is the real message of this Full Moon. And of life.

If we can love, then we must have love in us. Its not outside us, it is in us. If we desire love... then  it is because we are ourselves desirable. And if we can't, or won't ... (or think others can't or won't) then we know where we have to start.  With, yup...  our own self.

"Everything you are looking for is already inside of you."

Happy Love Day. Happy Full Moon! May your heart be open and your spirit SHINE!!

Mercury Retrograde: The Best Laid Plans of Mice and (Wo) Men!!

This week, the Sun remains in free thinking Aquarius, while the Moon, in talkative and social Gemini is caught up in tension with Mercury and Neptune in Pisces.  Mercury, planet of communication, is now retrograde in early Pisces, and almost exactly conjoined with mystical dreamy Neptune.

This influence mutes our thinking and our communications risk being less clear, and in many cases, downright fuzzy. This is non linear energy. The more we try to focus, the more cloudy and vague things can get. And the more we say under the chatty Gemini Moon, the less sense we may make.

The only solution is to go with the flow and take the path of least resistance. Instead of trying to force your left brain to function (logic, structure, linear thought) or force people to understand you, why not utilize this dreamy energy for creative or spiritual exploration. This mystical wave will only last a few days, before Mercury slips back into the more logical air sign, Aquarius, where it will have us rethinking our newly thought out plans and visions one more time.

Meanwhile, under this influence, take some time out for dreaming and delving into your intuitive side. A Moon in Gemini is excellent  for storytelling and weaving the magic of words in a creative way.

Of course, in the outer world of cause and effect, where Mercury rules communications, electronics and the internet… if anything can go wrong… it will! Messages don't arrive, stuff goes missing, things go awry!

My first encounter with Mercury madness came today while cat sitting my housemate’s cat  Rufus,  who somehow got locked outside last night on a very cold -30 Celsius night. When I discovered this I was understandably frantic, and thought 'OMG I’ve killed the cat!' How will she (my friend) ever forgive me!! (bit of drama?) I went door to door with pictures as well as calling the cat over and over (to no avail) My inner voice (which I ignored) said to stop worrying and relax… he would be back by the end of the day… but instead I spent hours printing up posters and searching up and down the back alley. That evening my boyfriend came by and called for Rufus outside the back door (as I had been doing all day). Within minutes, the fluffy old boy came meowing to be let in and all drama and trauma was averted.

Why didn’t I trust my inner voice? Why did I not see him scoot out the door as I put out the garbage? Why, why, why.....?

Mercury retrograde is coyote/trickster energy. Things that can get turned upside down, will… yet can also be turned back right side up just as quickly. (it helped that my boyfriend is a Pisces… he was right in the flow of things that day)

So instead of trying to make sense of things, why not use this time as it is meant to be used? For wonder and magic! Make music, make poetry, make love. Go with the flow!

Though lovely and creative and wonderfully fluid, this aspect can also create all kinds of emotional confusions and misunderstandings between people, so do be extra careful of your communication and double/ triple check agreements, plans, timetables etc. Words, ideas, intentions, and meanings can all be misconstrued and distorted in the Neptunian fog (along with emails  lost and calls missed) .

The internet (ruled by Mercury) is especially prone to this misinformation… particularly right now.

A sense of delay can be frustrating to those who took seriously the promise of the New Moon in Capricorn that started off 2014; its purpose was to get us to focus on manifesting our intentions in a concrete way. The next New Moon, in brilliant and forward thinking Aquarius, fueled our ambitions and drive with visions of a glorious  future.

Then, on top of all that,  the Year of the Horse on Feb 4th, promised us new fiery energy and activity to replace the watery introspection of the last year. Just as we are all amped up to get going,  it seems our ship has sailed into a fog and we are becalmed.

What’s that saying about making god laugh? (tell her your plans…!!)

Don’t lose heart.

There are many positive influences moving us forward, even if we cant see them, and though it seems we must once again stop to re evaluate our plans, we can continue to develop our personal mastery  through increasing our self awareness.

In the winter, when all is white and cold on the surface,  underneath the ground the roots and plants are teeming with activity in preparation for the coming spring. The recent 'Imbolc' celebration (see last post)  marked the halfway point between winter and spring, and though so many of us have been caught in a deep freeze this winter,  it will eventually thaw and things will begin to move forward.

In the meantime:
'when fishmen can't go fishing... they mend their nets.'

(I now I know... mixed metaphors ... sigh)

You know what I mean!!

Hang in there!!

Candlemas Imbolc Groundhog day

All earth and sun worshiping cultures throughout history had a system of interpreting the seasons as they passed, marking the shifts between the celestial energies present. Four such times of significance were the seasonal solstices and equinoxes. Though the mid-haven between these times were often just as important, and more closely tuned to the actual shift in seasons.   (

"Imbolc observes the midpoint (and hopefully) the waning of winter and approach of spring (more likely in the The UK where the celebration  originates... (less likely in northern climates where winter has several months to go) . Pagans often use fire and other forms of light to encourage the lengthening of day...  such a lighting a candle. Seed and bud imagery may be used, as well, to promote the growth of new life ensured by springtime.

Imbolc falls on the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Although it is attributed to the celts,  ancient Egyptians, Babylonians and indigenous groups are also believed to have celebrated an equivalent holiday.

The term 'Imbolc' derives from Old Irish and means "in the belly," or alternately "ewe's milk." The interpretation lends significance to the holiday as a celebration of fertility, reproduction and the young -- all overseen by the goddess Brigid. As with many pagan holidays, food and music are essential. Dishes for Imbolc tend to incorporate seeds, dairy and other spring-evoking foods.

Imbolc is also a time for spring cleaning.  Some clean their homes, take ritual baths and de-clutter their lives in other ways. This is believed to create space for the goddess to come into people's live and for new seeds to take root in the coming spring."

In North America, we have our own Feb 2nd celebration of mid winter : Groundhog Day!

According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks.

I love the film Groundhog Day about a cynical journalist (Bill Murray) who lives Groundhog Day over and over again until he gets what life is really about. Brilliant!  I have watched it at least ten times!!

Whatever you celebrate today... light a candle or catch a groundhog... its about the return of the light. Whatever shadows or darkness you face in your life, light a candle to remind you of the inner light that is always shining.

Light trumps darkness ... every time!

Let it shine! Let it shine!Let it shine!!
