New Moon in Aquarius: New Moment New Choice

A New Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon are in the exact same degree. We won’t actually see the moon as it sits behind the sun; a small sliver will appear in a day or two.

This joining of ‘brother sun’ and ‘sister moon’ is a seed time… the conjunction or ‘conjunctio’  (‘sacred union’) unites the conscious self (Sun) with the unconscious self (Moon), the masculine with the feminine.   As the alchemy of the New moon ripples out into the following month (or months depending on its impact) we can align our thoughts and intentions with this energy and grab a ride on its forward moving energy.

Aquarius is an air sign and deals with authenticity, eccentricity and forward thinking. This brings out the maverick in us, the rogue trader, the entrepreneurial spirit. It is also called the water bearer...  and connects us to our innate humanity. This Aquarius New Moon brings detachment, clarity and liberation; a chance to act and think (and feel) differently.  New ideas and visions can emerge at this time.

"Change your mind, change your life!" (Mystic Mamma)

The Aquarian based star card pictured here is about self esteem.

Aquarius  symbolizes personal freedom and individuality, yet is also the sign of the collective.  The celebrated Aquarian age is about finding the balance between our individuality and our connection to the group.

One is the reflection of the other.
"As within, so without."

Being progressive and future oriented, Aquarius also relates to electronics and any kind of new media that connects us to each other (including astrology)

“When Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, traveled through Aquarius from 1996-2003, the technological revolution created the freedom to connect with the whole world, where we share ideas and find our groups. Time and space were altered and new ways of understanding the world grew more acceptable."

This is another opportunity to create a new vision that will liberate us from old paradigms (conditioned patterns of thinking). A positive link to its ruler, Uranus, in Aries, emphasizes the urge for individuality, and gives us permission to ‘march to the beat of our own drummer’.

As long as this is done with emotional integrity (Moon in Aquarius) while ‘holding a space’ for the greater good, we will be in harmony with the energy of this moon.

An added bonus: Aquarian objectivity can help us detach from the dramas and traumas we have been encountering lately, particularly in the realm of relationships. With warrior planet Mars  at the beginning of a long journey through the  sign of relating (Libra),  (eight months instead of the usual two) this will be most useful.

“Allow your self and your relationships to adapt, ferment, simmer and blend through a process meant to improve your life and become more whole.”        BK, Planet Waves

We can use this forward thinking Aquarian energy to vision what we would like to manifest, especially  in regard to those lessons Mars will be stirring up, or we can focus on the area of our chart that it is occurring (see tab at top re meaning of houses). Just remember that with Mars in Libra, everything is going to involve our relationships with others.

If the New Moon is in your 2nd house of security and personal value and money, you might learn new ways of earning money, stepping beyond the old worn pathway you have been treading till now. You might become self employed as you break free from the system that has bound you.  Or in the 11th house  may find your ‘group’  and discover a new side of yourself. In the fifth house you could imagine a new love, or in the fourth, a new home etc (or a new home d├ęcor) etc etc

The possibilities are endless as the stars.

All of our processes now will involve some negotiating with others, as we learn the tricky balance of  building community and developing diplomacy while  standing up for our individuality.

This is also a Super Moon (i.e. closest to earth) which makes it especially potent. It is also called a ‘black moon’ as it is the second New Moon in the same month. Before the Romans edited the calendar into 12 months, there used to be 13  in a year (month comes from the word moon)  due to thirteen moon cycles in a year. This relates to thirteen menstrual cycles in a year for women, and is why the number thirteen has been made into a superstitious and negative thing. It represents the feminine and was celebrated in Wicca (early goddess based pagan religion) so the  early Christians tried to denigrate it by making us fear it.

At this time of the ‘return of the feminine’ this ‘Black Moon' also connects to black moon Lilith, who represents the wild feminine energy that has been suppressed for thousands of years.

While the visionary nature of New Moon in Aquarius helps move us up and out of stale or stagnant situations, and gets us to think 'outside the box', we will be challenged  on the very next day to hold onto those visions,  as Venus turns direct and bumps right into Pluto (the destroyer). Ouch!

Venus, another key symbol of the feminine, and planet of love and relating, has been moving backward through the patriarchal sign of Capricorn,  bringing us face to face with elements from the past that influenced how we live and love.  Pluto here forces us to awaken and see though the illusions that bind us and limit our manifestation.

This confrontation with Pluto (power issues, control, lord of change)  will show us one last time what we need to face or change so that we can move forward in the manner in keeping with our new vision. We could be tested now as the pull of past emotional patterns  threaten to sabotage our best laid plans. Capricorn is quite driven  and is about our need for material security. It also  represents the old authority systems (father based, patriarchal) that have defined what success means, while Jupiter sitting exactly opposite in Cancer (mother) pulls us toward emotional safety and the need to mother ourselves.  Parental influences maybe part of what we are working through. Money matters will also be highlighted if our base of security gets shaken up, as we come to see just what our emotional security is based on.

The Pluto Venus conjunction also links to the archetypes of Psyche (Psyche and Eros) and of Persephone (abducted into the underground by Pluto) As Persephone's mother, Demeter, grieved her loss, there was no spring until she was returned for half the year. Pysche had to undergo a series of tasks to earn back her true love. These myths allude to the need to reawaken our feminine power (in both men and women).

This New Moon also closely precedes the Chinese New Year of the Wood Horse (power) as well as the Celtic celebration of Imbolc on Feb 2nd (the half way point between the winter solstice and spring equinox). At Imbolc we light a candle to invoke the light.

This is a time to find out how much we are still acting out of past paterns. We may have to develop new  strategies to deal with sudden changes or developments (square to Uranus) as things we value (Venus) get removed (Pluto). It's time to work smarter not harder.

"Most of us have been jolted (Uranus) by some hard (Saturn), painful (Pluto) truth (Jupiter) in regards to love or money (Venus). " (

Feb 4, we move into the year of the 'Yang Wood Horse'. This is a majour shift of energy, from several years of watery introspection and emotional purging, into a powerful forward thrust of extroverted energy. It looks like this  year is going to be all about 'personal power'.  We have been  shedding the old patterns based on shame and fear and old authoritarian voices telling us we cant do it, shouldn't do it etc. Now it is time to step up to the plate step free of what has held us back!

So...  Make a wish, set an intention, see it happen.

Rethinking the past so we can be be more in the Present

If you "like'  the Aurum Astrology's page on Facebook (see side link) you get to see short daily posts ... such as this one ... or... you can continue to visit  here on weekends for  something a bit more 'meaty'.

Here is today's sample from Facebook:

"The Moon and Mercury in Aquarius are now in exact square with Saturn in Scorpio...(square = tension)
combining with Venus (love, relationship, money)
going backward in Capricorn (authority, success or failure, getting serious).

These combined energies bring us deep inside our lives and loves ... to ponder and reflect on the emotional patterns from the past that we are still repeating in the present. Some have been inherited through many generations.

Aquarius brings us the detachment to step back and see clearly. Jupiter in Cancer helps us celebrate, nurture and set free our inner child. Neptune and Chiron in Pisces bring us profound healing.

 It's all good! "

"What Jung calls “participation mystique,” is the deep enmeshment that can happen in intimate relationships when an individual doesn’t do the inner-work to heal their unconscious pain. The wounds get passed through the generations, metastasizing through our relationships, literally shaping our children’s lives. Sickness my stay in the family tree until someone in the outer branches has enough support and awareness to face and move through that ancient grief." ( from Toko-pa's FB page) to read more go to

Howling at the (Full) Moon

Jan. 15, 11:52 p.m. EST: Full Moon in Cancer  -
“Amid the zero cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Native villages... Hence the native name Full Wolf Moon’. Since the moon arrives at its farthest point from Earth,  less than three hours earlier, this will also be the smallest full moon of 2014. It will appear 12.2-percent smaller than the full moon of Aug.10, the biggest full moon of the year."        (

Cancer is the sign of the mother, and represents our need to nurture and be nurtured. Right now both Jupiter and a point called ‘Black Moon Lilith’ are already occupying this watery sign. Lilith was the first biblical woman, created as original mate to Adam. When she refused to lie under him, she was exiled and made into a demon.  Eve was  a more suitable, passive model of womanhood, made from Adams rib, and  the ensuing story of the apple and the serpent conveniently blamed women for all the ills of ‘man’kind.

This wild ‘feminine’ spirit has been kept down for thousands of years, while patriarchy (father rule, 'might is right' etc) has raped and plundered not only women, and certain races, but also the mother of all, our planet earth.

The Full Moon in the sign of the mother will stir up our emotional needs,  and amplify the deep longing to reconnect to the nurturing aspect in all of us. Think about what feeds your soul ... is it music or poetry or a moon lit walk in silence? Is it drumming or dancing or making love with passionate abandon? Or is it sitting in stillness and silence, so you can hear (and feel) the waves of the inner ocean? Or maybe it is holding your loved ones close ... or being tenderly held by them?
 (or all of the above)

The feminine archetype not only represents women, and the earth, but the feeling nature in each human being . As the symbol of the sun connects us to the masculine aspect of father, logic and  more outward manifestation, the moon, our mother, is about our inner life, the hidden part of us that whispers in our dreams. Lilith nearby is the wild passionate self that wants to sing and dance and howl at the moon. Both exist inside of us and both are itching to be acknowledged.

At this time of cleansing and reawakening, we are being pushed to get more fully in touch with our intuitive and sensitive inner nature, as well as our inner wildness, so we can join with our masculine side to create a world we can not only survive ... but thrive in.

This expansive nurturing Full Moon beckons us to sink into our very soul and listen closely to her  subtle whispers. Only they wont be so subtle right now.  Before the Moon is completely Full, it gets a big boost from Jupiter at 14 degrees Cancer … setting off and amplifying the powerful grand square between Pluto Uranus, Mars, and Jupiter (see my last post)

I just finished watching a television documentary about the 60s… that time of huge personal, social and cultural shifts that were marked outwardly by race riots in the USA,  college sit ins all over America and Europe, huge marches protesting the Vietnam war, the rise of the women’s movement etc. I grew up with those stories in the background,  listening to the amazing music of that era: Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Neil Young, etc singing protest songs and  heralding the  approach of a new age.

That time of powerful upheaval and cultural revolution was marked by a similar  astrology as now... with an emphasis on Pluto (power control death and transformation) and Uranus (awakening, rebellion, sudden change). Mars (aggression action) was also in the mix in 1965, sitting opposite Saturn (authority, duty and the material world) and Chiron (where we are wounded and need healing). These were explosive, dynamic  times. Then Jupiter  moved into square Uranus and Pluto… amplifying and exaggerating and the revolutionary spirit of the 60's.

Jupiter is a visionary and a teacher. He represents the seeker of truth in us all; and he is sitting now in Cancer, sign of the mother. This energy is seeking that pure inner child that is the pure soul expression at the very heart of every human being.  Joseph Campbell calls this the ‘golden child’… the original and innocent part of us that came from source. To get in touch with our inner child we have to learn to feel. So many of us are emotionally numb from our daily encounters with a sometimes harsh and unfeeling outer world.

As I write this, Jupiter and the Moon are in the same exact degree, all cuddly and snuggly in Cancer, the moon’s home sign. This double emphasis brings a lovely softness that will carry us into the Full Moon tomorrow and help us all to relax and heal our hard edges. Momma Cancer wants only to feed and nurture her children. She comes in peace.

At this time of personal, social and cultural upheaval and change, even when it feels like the wolves are howling at the door, we are being given so much love and support to honour our truth and find our way back to ourselves.

Every person is on a journey home. That home is not far away, or only accessible after we die; it lies at our very core.

Home truly is where the heart is.

Let the Full Moon carry you home ...
back to the garden:

(And this time, let's get it right.....)

Peace and Prosperity! Venus Retrograde in Capricron.

Warning: This is a bit long but covers a lot that is going on right now.

I just watched a tourism video set in the 1920s.  It was a time fairly soon after the industrial revolution (1880's) meant  inventions and machines were developing fast and furious; everything was accelerating and changing the landscape in irreversible ways.

Right now,  Venus (love, relationships, money, values) is going backward in Capricorn, sign of  material progress, and we may all find ourselves reflecting on our values and our relationship to money and success, or going back over past loves and personal relationships.

The video got me thinking about the incredible acceleration and  the pursuit of material goods (Capricorn) ... in the form of money and things and gadgets etc (at least in in western culture), which is now spreading to the rest of the world. Before the industrial revolution, things stayed relatively the same for hundreds and hundreds of years. People farmed and produced goods on a very basic level (compared to today)and even though there was international trade, it all moved at a realtively slow pace (compared to now).

Capricorn brings the tendency to think about how we ‘get ahead’  i.e. acquire status, money and  some form of mastery. This is where we 'make our mark' on the world.

Venus retrograde here prompts us  to reflect on what that 'mark' might be, and on what 'success' means. The New Moon in Capricorn on Jan 1st set the stage for some serious thoughts about manifestation,  and now Venus retrograde prompts us to reflect even more deeply on our values, our successes and (so-called) failures.

Looking at this video I was thinking that compared to ages past, this time was so very sophisticated and advanced (on a technological scale). And yet now it seems so dated. It's quite remarkable to think about how it all keeps evolving and shifting so rapidly.

And now this material progress has become accelerated to to point of absurdity, as we all race to get the newest iphone or tablet or laptop, or big-screened  telly or faster car or, or, or....

Even in  remote places in India, everyone has a mobile phone. I am not judging this as good or bad, only reflecting on where we are with it all, as appropriate to this retrograde in Capricorn. One truth we have to face is that this drive for more, more, more  has brought us to the brink of some very serious global problems.

Capricorn wants to progress. It's ruler Saturn brings us down into the physical realm. It builds structures and systems and sets up authorities and teachers and rules and regulations.  And like lead, which Saturn rules, these can be protective or they can be poisonous. Pluto in Capricorn now is breaking down a lot of these old systems and getting us to rethink the way things are run.

In this time of deep transformation (if you so choose)(or even if you don’t) a required part of that is to look at the footprint we leave on this planet…as an individual and as a society.  Capricorn is nothing if not pragmatic. It requires that we grow up and take responsibility for our own lives. Saturn in Scorpio has been forcing some of us into some deep self-examination over the past year (with more to come). It is we who have to sort ourselves out, not some government, or pope of church or set of outdated rules.

So what rules do we follow instead?

Neptune and Chiron in Pisces continue to lead us inward to connect to a greater source. As within so without.  They pull us deep into ourselves and bring us face to face with our innate creativity and spiritual core. This will help us let go of old dependencies and habits, as we base our strength of an inner knowing rather than conditioned beliefs. Pisces also activates our compassion and  empathy which bring us into connection to others. We are all part of the same source.

Memories of the past may be stronger now with Jupiter opposite in nurturing sign of the mother (Cancer). We may also find ourselves looking more closely at how we get our own needs met and what feeds us in our relationships. The Pisces influence calls on us to feed ourselves from within. I know this sounds very selfish, or even narcissistic, and in excess it certainly can be, yet there is a required process now that means letting go of outer influences and seeking our own inner centre. If our cup is empty, we have little to give.

As we reminisce about the past and our childhood influences, the grand square, by forcing change, may be bringing up old traumas and unmet needs in order for us to heal and transform our relationship patterns.

It doesn’t have to all be negative. Jupiter in Cancer also brings us positive memories that will contribute to our self understanding. I recently had a flash back of being six years old, sitting at a desk in school, learning how to read and write. As I painstakingly outlined the  letters..a.b.c..etc I felt such a deep satisfaction and pleasure of learning that have marked my whole life (Sun/self in 9th house of learning). This pure and pristine  sense of being engrossed in the moment and in that wonderful pleasure of learning brought me a sweet moment of joy remembered.

How do we get so far away from ourselves?

The main point is that right now we can access the past (Venus retrograde) in a productive way (Capricorn) to see what holds meaning for us (Venus) and what makes us feel happy and safe (Jupiter in Cancer).

Our inward focus then brings us naturally into our relationship with others.  So many influences in the past couple of years have been  getting us to examine our inter-connections to see if they are working or not. and with Mars in Libra (ruled by Venus), our relationship area is being stirred up and agitated.  Mars, in great tension to Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter, brings learning through confrontations and stand offs and through standing our ground. Lessons in boundaries and self regard are part of the process.

Libra wants harmony and balance and Mars wants a fight, so this is a tricky aspect, even without the added squares. Personal conflicts and tensions are causing  people to feel they have to draw lines in the sand.  If this is stirring up your fight or flight (or freeze) instincts,  and/or pushing you to speak up for yourself, just be careful of knee jerk reactions or any ego driven urges for retaliation.

Anger has its place and I am not saying suppress it. That would be hard to do now anyway as we encounter old buried stuff that needs clearing. Use the Venus based reflection to look at the roots of any rising anger,  such as how we give our power away in order to lease others(Venus) or let some people run all over us.... or sometimes it's about how we don't always make the best choices.

Mars Pluto can also show where we might bully others (consciously or not) or try to control everything by force. This is very strong energy and is easily projected… (it's not easy to own such powerful stuff).

So remember to STOP (Stop Think Observe Proceed) before you act.

Venus  will help us take the time to step back to observe our own responses and reactions, then we can use our Mars assertiveness more wisely (assertiveness is different from aggression).

There is also an unexpected factor in everything right now. Sudden surprises, courtesy of Uranus,  can also bring positive turnarounds;  Make the best of it!!

One last warning: Mars opposite Uranus also triggers accidents and mishaps. Do be careful driving or if some object is flying toward you…. remember to duck!!  I have heard of several accidents recently amongst people who I know are being personally hit by these transits. One friend backed right into a cement block that was in his blind spot. Ouch!! Talk about a wake up call!!

And for those of you who are in the midst of a stand off right now with lines  being drawn deeply in the sand...

....  Forgiveness and forbearance are a vital part of the mix(Neptune Chiron in Pisces)
If you are having trouble resolving angers that are coming up, or shifting deep resentments, there is a lovely Hawaiian prayer called the Hoponopono that helps with releasing negative energies toward ourselves or others.

“I’m sorry
Please forgive me
I love you
I thank you.”

Say it to yourself first, then to the person who is ticking you off. They are your greatest teacher.

The I Ching (one of my favourite books of ancient wisdom) also provides some good advice in the fine art of letting go of blame.

“The superior person, when obliged to judge the mistakes of others, tries to penetrate their minds with understanding, in order to gain a sympathetic appreciation of the circumstances.
A deep understanding that knows how to pardon, was considered the highest form of justice (in ancient China) …
There was no reason to fear abuse of such mildness.  For it sprang not from weakness but from a superior clarity.”

I wish you peace and prosperity.

2014 is Here!!

2014 kicked off with a powerful New Moon in Capricorn. This is most auspicious, as a New Moon marks new beginnings, and in Capricorn, brings the power of manifestation and discipline to whatever projects we are starting the year with.

A link to the grand cross formation makes it even more impressive, as that dynamic energy puts us all into fast forward motion.

Capricorn is about ambition, mastery and manifestation. Its ruler is Saturn, the lord of time and karma, and of the material world. The karmic goal of Capricorn is to direct oneself with maturity and wisdom, and to structure oneself within society.  We gain mastery by taking responsibility in our lives and focusing our energies toward concrete goals.

As spiritual beings having a physical experience, it is through Capricorn that we assume full responsibility for what we create in the outer world. A New Moon here will help us focus our intentions and zoom in on what we want to bring forward into 2014. This is where we walk our talk make it real.

There was (and is) an added intensity created by the Moon linking up with with both Mercury (thinking and communication) and Pluto (intensification and transformation)… with both sitting opposite to Jupiter and squaring Mars in Libra and Uranus in Aries. These are the planets that currently make up the Cardinal Grand Cross that has been the hallmark of our time. If you have personal planets in the early parts of any of these sings you may be feeling this all rather acutely! It also means there are probably major changes going on in your life.

Cardinal signs are the movers and shakers of the zodiac…they start off each season and bring the impetus to get things moving.

The Grand Cross together with the New Moon brings some heavy duty manifestation power to our first week in 2014.

This powerful signature of our times is the cause (or reflection) of so much change and upheaval on our planet and is highlighted by a square between Pluto and Uranus. This aspect is going to peak again in April and we can expect more mayhem and upheaval throughout the world. Its all about  breaking down and breaking through!

A grand cross is a group of four planets all in a square to each other (90 degrees) and also opposite each other (thus called a cross or a square)

Squares create tension. Tension requires a response and thus triggers action. Like when lifting weights… you are actually tearing down muscle fibre, which then rebuilds itself and in the process becomes stronger.

“Tension is associated with growing (as in the term “growing pains”), because when you act to resolve tension in any form, you frequently grow in some way as a fringe benefit.”
                            Eric Francis, Planet Waves

A grand square (or cross) therefore creates a grand tension… which in turn becomes powerful, transformative forward moving energy. I’ve spoken before how this is like a diamond…something beautiful and strong created under great pressure. The growing pains and feeling of pressure are part of the process.

This will affect our communication (Mercury) and emotions (Moon), our personal power and control issues as well as our money issues (Pluto) and our ability to nurture ourselves and others and our need to honour our planet, Gaia or  mother earth (Jupiter in Cancer). It will also shake up our relationships (Mars in Libra) by triggering a need to break free of restrictions, as well as provide a new vision of what is possible (Uranus in Aries).

Today (Jan 5th) the Moon in Pisces added a Kite formation ...adding even more creative dynamic energy to the mix. See how everything is focusing on the group of planets (top right) in Capricorn?
We are being implelled to think differently, act more consciously, move more gently and envision more clearly and boldly than ever before.

If there are areas of our life that are stuck in stagnation, we may tend to resist this pressure. Then, if we resist our resistance … that itself becomes another tension. Which all eventually turns into even more growth as we examine our own resistance and discover things about ourselves in the process (Saturn in Scorpio).

The main point is that if we actively engage with these forces, we can be liberated from our blockages and accomplish a lot. If we resist, it could be hell (what you resist persists).

Take heart. So much has happened in the last year to shake us loose from old patterns and habits. We now have an opportunity to really progress in our lives in a positive direction. Just don’t expect it to be coasting along the same ol’ same ol. This New Moon heralds a dynamic push forward and it is available for all of us to tap into.

The motto for Capricorn:   “The buck stops here!”

It’s time to step up to the plate and do whatever it is you came here to do.

Be the change you want to see in the world!!
