WInter Solstice - Welcoming the Light - Approaching 2014

In ancient times, human beings had no artificial light sources and were more attuned to the cycles of nature signified by the Sun and Moon.  Massive prehistoric stone monuments such as Stonehenge in Britain are aligned to capture the light at the moment of the winter solstice sunrise. Throughout history, people have celebrated the winter solstice, often in anticipation toward the return of summer sunlight

During the warmer half of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, the North Pole is tilted toward the sun. The northern winter solstice occurs when the "top" half of Earth is tilted away from the sun at its most extreme angle of the year.

"Solstice" means  "sun stands still." That's because—after months of growing shorter and lower since the summer solstice—the sun's arc through the sky appears to stabilize, with the sun seeming to rise and set in the same two places for several days. Then, on Dec 25th,  the arc begins growing longer and higher in the sky, reaching its peak at the summer solstice.”

Today is a time to pause and stand still with the Sun as it sits at the cusp of Capricorn. Time to turn inward and connect to the earth and to the heavens and celebrate our position between the two.

There has been a lot of  rather squirrely energy about these days… partially caused by  Uranus (the awakener) turning direct a half an hour after the Gemini Full Moon on Tuesday.

Uranus is lightning bolt, sudden awakening, visionary change type of energy. It's electric and sparkly and has re-activated its forward motion  in Aries… the sign of the innovator, warrior, beginner of all things. Time for something completely different,

Added to that, right now now Mars (action, aggression) sits exactly opposite Uranus and is also square Pluto (the destroyer) and Jupiter (the expander),  setting off the Cardinal Grand Cross. Squares are tense angles that impel us to action. When there are four squares lined up in a grand cross formation, we experience amplified tension as a powerful transformative force is created through intense energetic pressure. If this formation is aspecting your own chart personally, there will be profound changes happening in your life. If the change is resisted, it will occur anyway, as so called  'fate'!  Better to work with these powerful energies. Get to know them so you can use them to your advantage.

Added to the above, today Venus (planet  love and relating)  begins a backwards journey for six weeks in the more serious sign of Capricorn, turning our outward focus more inward.  Venus is about relationships and  energy exchange, and therefore also rules money. As it goes retrograde, our relationships may take a more serious turn, and our urge to shop, may drop, so in its place a more intimate level of exchange can occur.

That's not such a bad thing. I think there is enough 'stuff' on the planet!

So, from the Full Moon on Tuesday to the WInter Solstice today...  we have moved from an excited and rather high strung  energy field to a more intense, pressured inward focus. This grand cross pressure and tension will dominate the next few weeks, and as always,  it is important to ground our energy so we will not be knocked off balance.

That combines with the Solstice message to : Stand still. Ground. Breathe!!

Focus on welcoming the light.

Meanwhile,  as the Suns energy has gradually decreased, our energy levels may have gone down with it. It is a natural instinct at this time of year to slow down, retreat, turn inward.  Let go. Yet  just before Christmas we are all often scrambling around  like mad, making travel plans, going to parties, buying gifts, consuming etc. The Venus retrograde will help slow all that down.

Time to take a chill pill.

Some of the rituals around the solstice can help ground our energies and connect us to the earth and sky and to our hearts. At this time of shorter days, we can light a candle and write down everything we want to release and burn it. Then write down what you want to manifest in the coming year.

I went to a sacred circle last night and after we burned our list of things to release we wrote down our intentions for 2014 on cards and put them in envelopes addressed to ourselves.  It's all about releasing the old to make way for the new.

This is a time of inhalation, before the coming out-breath at Christmas a few days. Breath in as you connect to the past year and go over lessons learned and progress made. Then  breath out and release the past as you welcome the coming light.

Over the last few days,  the Sun and earth also lined up with the galactic core, around which the Sun travels ... and we around it! (that cycle is the source of the Mayan calendar). Remember last year and all the hype about the end of the world? Well it did not end in an obvious way, but a major earth cycle did finish and a new one began. We are now moving into a new paradigm and a new era, and the  current, rather intense astrology of shake up and wake up (Uranus/Pluto Square)  is there to facilitate our awakening.

The coming age promises to be most different from the one preceding, as we sit at the very beginning of a profound shift in consciousness.  The age of Aquarius is about equality and fairness and the true human family finally coming together as one.

And to do that we must first know who we are.  The Galactic Core in Sagittarius represents a deep sense of knowing and purpose. It sends out a homing beacon that permeates our universe,  and at this time of year, as our planet moves into alignment with it in Sagittarius, we can feel the message very strongly. It is saying:

‘Know your purpose. Know your source. Know who you are.’

Some say that in essence who we are is pure light.

So, as we celebrate the return of the light, we can also celebrate the return of our own light.

Let it shine. Let it shine. Let it shine.

Full Moon in Gemini Knowledge vs Belief

This is a celebratory, dynamic, chatty Full Moon, with Moon in Gemini and Sun and Mercury (ruler of Gemini) sitting opposite in Sagittarius.

Gemini is the symbol of duality (represented by the twins) and of all the multiplicities of life. In Gemini there is always so much to say. This is  the sign of the mind with all its complexities and intrigues; our curiousity and endless questioning create a great a variety of expressions ... including the strong urge to socialize.

Gemini is about our daily lives, and Sagittarius is about seeing the big picture.

 Think globally, act locally!

The sign of Gemini is ruled by Mercury, planet of communication, which is currently cuddled up to the Sun in Sagittarius. This can set up a polarity between what you believe vs what you know. or what you believe and what others profess to know) Gemini wants us to  to think and  Sagittarius wants us to follow our hearts. We can  honour both as we trust  that inner knowing while also accepting that others have their own beliefs and knowing. Its not either-or ... it is either-and.

Both these signs are majour communicators so this Full Moon will have us all talking up a storm. It may also cause foot-in-mouth disease as we blurt out more than we hold back. That could be  cathartic release or  a total disaster,  depending on what gets shared (or over shared) and to whom.  Do be careful of what you say to people. Try not to be too all knowing,  and if someone speaks a bit out of line, try to let it pass!

Sagittarius is known for its blunt truth telling and that can be great and actually quite freeing to be finally honest about things. Just keep I mind that there is  a lot of planetary tension in the background these days,  making people touchy and reactive.

Because of the links to the grand cross formation  being completed by warrior planet Mars (aggression, sex drive, action) ... I really really recommend you temper (no pun intended) your urge-to-purge with awareness of others feelings and think about what you have to say before you speak.

Easier said than done!

Overall this Full Moon can be quite liberating and brings us a lovely and spirited beginning to the upcoming holidays. We  have Uranus, planet of freedom/changes/sudden surprises, turning direct just a half hour after the Full Moon, so there could also be shocks or upsets in store for some people.  Mars in Libra is going to be stirring up the grand cross all through the holidays. The saying 'never a dull moment' fully applies here.

Christmas time can be tricky; though a wonderful time to gather with family, it is also emotionally touchy for many. Expectations run high and  disappointments abound as family dynamics stir up old patterns, issues, wounds. This rather wild and unpredictable energy is not going to make it any easier.

Expect the  unexpected! Keep your heart open.  Let many things pass. Nurture yourself and others.

And have fun (always) !

These are challenging times, and they are meant to be, as they shake us out of our complacency and  wake us up to new possibilities.  This year of the Grand Water Trine has helped many of us shed some of the emotional baggage we have dragged along all our lives. That powerful flow of yin feminine energy is still active and links to the Full Moon  to continue bringing blessings, healing and emotional mastery to those brave enough to swim in her waters.

Uranus, the awakener is in opposition to Mars the planet of aggression. This combo is erratic, upsetting and potentially accident prone ... so please drive carefully and do take your time. Go slow, stop a lot along the way, enjoy the scenery but keep your eyes on the road.

Hmmm... Sounds like a life philosophy!

It's  all good as long as we continue healing our hearts, awakening our souls and expanding our consciousness.

Happy Full Moon!!

Mercury in Sagittarius: Expand your Thinking!

“Mercury in Sag (Wed) and Mars into Libra Saturday = things are lightening/speeding up! Get on ya horse 'n ride!"                             Tom Lescher, The Pele Report

For most of this year we have been going through a powerful period of emotional cleansing, represented by a Grand Trine in Water Signs, and amped up by a recent focus in the rather intense sign of Scorpio. That will remain the background with Saturn and North Node still in Scorpio. But things feel a bit lighter with Sun and Mercury now in Sagittarius. In my last post about the New Moon in Sag, (scroll down)  I  described the expansive joyful energies of Sagittarius.

This is the sign of the freedom loving adventurer and spiritual seeker in all of us. Mercury here asks us to think outside the box and answer that inner call for higher knowledge. (see last post on the Sagittarius New Moon by scrolling below)

Another shift of energy comes as warrior planet Mars moves into air sign Libra, sign of the scales. Libra is ruled by Venus, planet of love, and softens the aggressive qualities of Mars.  Mercury and Sun in Sagittarius expand our vision and fill us with optimism.

This current shift of energies leads us toward the Winter solstice yet again,  as  in our yearly journey around the Sun,  and earth and Sun line up exactly with the galactic core. When this happened last year, a powerful group of planets at this same spot, plus an eclipse, heralded the end of the Mayan Calendar and the shift into the New Age.

Now, a year later, Mars moving further into Libra  is going to set off the Grand Cross formation that has been shaking and awakening our world(s). Mars will be in the sign of relationships for 6 whole months (rather unusual for Mars) which means yet again we will be  awakening to our relationship patterns, good or bad. This new age cannot and will not be anything like the one preceding it, and therefor our most basic patterns and assumptions are going to be challenged and worked over.

Next week’s Full Moon in Gemini (opposite Sun in Sag) will amplify our core beliefs as Sun in Sag asks us to step outside old habitual ways of thinking. I will write more about the Full Moon next week.

In the meantime, the current emphasis on all things Sag opens up our consciousness and our intuition and helps us step beyond the limitations we have put on ourselves (or others have put upon us).

I came upon a flower remedy recently that describes this dynamic perfectly. Shasta Daisy is about helping us to see the big picture.

“Positive qualities: Synthesizing ideas into a living wholeness, with a mandalic or holistic consciousness.
Patterns of imbalance: Thinking too much by the over-intellectualization of reality, while seeing information as bits and pieces rather than parts of a whole (Gemini)

Shasta Daisy flower essence is for the person who focuses too much on the details of a project, compartmentalizing ideas, but not being able to see the whole picture. In our society we often over emphasize mental work, especially in the scientific community. This flower essence helps a person integrate both emotional and intellectual aspects of life.”  To read more go to

So theres a sense of optimism in the air as well as a cautionary note.

As we head toward the Winter Solstice and the upcoming holidays , the renewed emphasis on the Grand Cross means there will not be many dull moments.  This powerful squaring of very powerful planets is in Cardinal signs; the mover sand shakers of the universe.

Mars in Libra indicates that there is more learning (or unlearning) to do in the area of relationships. Push-pull power/control dynamics may again be activated bringing up issues of commitment vs freedom as we feel the increasing importance of being true to ourself. These two are not mutually exclusive; they only seem that way sometimes. Walking our talk is the way to end up where we want to be.

As we get ready to once again hop on this planetary rollercoaster ride, its good to know we have some good vibes coming our way to prepare ourselves. Although these are challenging times, especially if these outer planets are hitting your chart directly,  this process of outgrowing old habits can also be fun if we know how to move with the changes.

The Sagittarius message is that the only true way to stabilize, is by establishing a strong connection to our core.

Open your heart, know who you are, and be the change you want to see in the world (and in others)!
