A Blood Moon/Full Moon Eclipse Sept 27/28

The Blood Moon /Full Moon Eclipse is upon us! (Sunday evening in North America)

When the Earth eclipses a full Moon, sunlight is diverted through the Earth's atmosphere first, which sometimes causes the totally eclipsed Moon to look reddish.

The Lunar Eclipse on September 27/ 28, 2015 will occur during the Northern Hemisphere's first fall (autumn) full Moon. Called the Harvest Moon in many northern cultures, it is the Full Moon closest to the Autumn Equinox (Sept 23rd)  which increases its significance.

On a mythological level, Blood Moons are seen as harbingers of change.

It may seem like something is being taken away, while the potential also exists for much to be added. We just have to make space for it. This is another moment of quantum shift as things rearrange themselves. For some it will feel like the ground is shifting beneath your feet. Yet, its all just energy, and energy cannot be created and cannot be destroyed. It’s just being moved around a little(or a lot)

“Nothing can be given or taken away; nothing has been added or subtracted; nothing increased or diminished. We stand on the same shore before the same mighty ocean. The ocean of love. There it is - in perpetuum. As much in a broken blossom, the sound of a waterfall, the swoop of a carrion bird as in the thunderous artillery of the prophet.

We move with eyes shut and ears stopped; we smash walls where doors are waiting to open to the touch; we grope for ladders, forgetting that we have wings; we pray as if God were deaf and blind, as if S/He were in a space. No wonder the angels in our midst are unrecognizable.

One day it will be pleasant to remember these things.”

Henry Miller

Astrology describes the cycles of time and space and matter; the powerful source energy that moves stars and suns and planets. The interrelationships of things, the meeting and melding of energies, the cross-currents and the tides… all these we speak of, and all that is really just pure energy in the guise of matter; cosmic movements of planetary bodies in space expressing themselves as archetypal forces.

Eclipses have always held a powerful place in mythologies all over the world. Many thought the sun or moon was dying… great fear was often accompanied by intense ritual meant to appease the god/s. Death of a god was rectified by death of someone or something.

Now we are so ‘advanced’ and ‘civilized’… we see no such power and have no such fear. Yet the fascination remains.

When I experienced my first Blood Moon years ago I was awestruck. There it hung in the night sky, this glowing round, red orb hanging above our little planet called earth. Suddenly the Moon felt more solid and real and not so very far away. I cant quite explain why it brought me to tears… I was moved beyond any logic. That’s kind of what the Moon represents… and does… it connects us to a more intuitive, illogical side of our being. Some fear that part… the word Lunatic comes from Luna (Moon). Eclipses can accentuate that fear.

In astrological terms an eclipses does signify some kind of shift or death, something that  is passing away to make room for new energies to emerge.

A Solar eclipse has more to do with external changes, while the Moon signifies a more internal process.

If you know your own chart, look to see where in it the Blood Moon occurs( go to astro.com for a free chart) The “ house’ meanings in the tab at the top describe the where change may be immanent for you) The outer change would have been triggered by the Solar eclipse two weeks ago, while this lunar eclipse may show the resulting emotional adjustments needing to be made. Blockages that have become intense during the last few weeks may now dissolve or reach resolution. Tears may fall....

One of the things that makes this particular eclipse so powerful is its position at the ‘Aries Point”. That is the beginning of the zodiac and where the solar year begins in Aries. It is said to represent the link between the personal and the global.

So while this Moon will definitely activate more internal, feeling based processes, they will likely link in some way to what is going on the greater world.

As within, so without.’

Aries (Moon)  is about the self entering into the world. Libra (Sun) is about self and other… the harmony and balance between things that keeps it all flowing along.

As Moon in Aries is what is eclipsed (dying) we are being asked to move from a self centered narcissistic approach and look out to those around us. The Syrian refugee situation may be a good example. Friends of mine are working on the relief effort so I hear a good bit of news and am deeply touched, not only by the suffering there but by the caring response of so many. And yes , then there are the governments and the war mongers and the selfish ‘other’ who judge and condemn and ignore.

I am not going to tell you how you should thing or act, nor am I clear on what the solution is,  except to listen to this clarion call to get more in touch with our hearts. That seems a good place to start.

The ruler of the Sun in Libra is Venus, who,  sitting in Leo, is ruler of the heart. Venus has been dancing with Mars in the sign of the Lion. Leo is about the playful celebration of our true magnificence. Mars in Leo brings courage. Cour = heart. Mars will move into Virgo tomorrow but continues to invigorate Venus in Leo.

Venus is the feminine side of love, and Mars is the masculine. When these two get together there is a lot of passion and a LOT of heart.

So part of the current astrology is asking us to find our heart's passion by finding balance with our feminine and masculine sides. We need to feel deeply and we need to act consciously. The two in harmony bring us that passionate engagement with life we all crave.

There’s been a lot of tension with Saturn Squaring Mars. Many have felt blocked, frustrated exhausted.
Yet sometimes, blockages have their purpose. They slow us down and force us to re-evaluate how we are acting (Mars) Feeling (Venus) or  thinking (Mercury) (or communicating)

Mercury retrograde in Libra turns us in on ourselves and amplifies the need to reflect on our relationships with others.  AS Venus moves  backward through Libra it gives us one more chance to be the change we want to see in others (and in the world.)

The Eclipse is also being activated by its close contact with Lilith, who I’ve mentioned before.

In  Judeo-Christian mythology, the original woman created with Adam was named Liliith. She was a wild woman who refused to obey or lie under Adam (representing earlier matriarchal cultures where women were powerful and free).   So Lilith was banished from Eden and Eve was her replacement. And thus began the rule of man (patriarchy) Someone from his rib who was soft and pliant and malleable, until she ate that damn apple,  and screwed it all up of course. Damn women,  it’s all their fault!!!

Ahh there's the rub. There is the feminine who has been banished, repressed, depressed for a long, long time. She represents the soul, the feeling self, the inner world. Our focus on logic and linear thinking has turned anything that is non-linear into 'woo' (interesting how that is kind of a short abbreviation of 'women').   Seems it is nigh time for her return so we can right the balance.

Part of what has to be released is this old and outworn negativity to feelings; toward our feeling self, and to vulnerability, to women and children ,  to 'woo'. We are now being pointed toward our intuitive,  more emotionally intelligent  self, so she can be integrated with the other, rather than be relegated to 'other'.

These are powerful times. Our soul is calling out to be felt, to be known. Time to embrace the lost feminine.  She's been out in the cold for too long.  Let her speak, let her rise. Let her dance!

Happy Eclipse. May you know the passion and joy of a heart truly open.

  1. I was a Lilith until a jealous, insecure woman boss turned me into an Eve. I am fighting to return to being a Lilith. I am alone in this journey, but stroner than a year ago. Reasessing my office colleagues and yes, Jupiter is transiting my 10th house Virgo and Saturn is crossing my Ascendent.
